New York Stock Exchange, Manhattan, New York

The New York Stock Exchange (nicknamed the "Big Board") is the largest stock exchange in the world. Back in 1792 the Buttonwood Agreement was signed by 24 brokers on Wall Street , under a Buttonwood tree. In 1817 the organisation drafted a constitution and became known as the New York Stock and Exchange Board. The first location for the business was Wall Street but in 1865 it moved to Broad Street. In 1896 the Dow Jones Industrial Average was established.Due to a huge increase in the amount of stock traded, a new building was required and a design competition was held. The New Classic design by George B. Post won and in 1901 demolition started of the existing building and those lots adjacent to it. The new building opened in 1903 at 18 Broad Street. A sculpture by John Quincy Adams Ward in the pediment is called "Integrity Protecting the Works of Man".
